Starting the day
with a handshake
At Kendall Elementary, Principal Scott Wright and Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Laughlin are the first faces students see when their parents drop them off or when they walk to school. Rain, shine, sleet or snow, the administrators stand in front of the school every morning to greet students with a handshake. "It's the best part of my day," said O'Laughlin, who began the practice when he took the superintendent job six years ago. On Mondays, students like to talk about what they did over the weekend. And Wright and O'Laughlin always hear about little league scores and new baby brothers or sisters. It's also an opportunity for their parents to ask questions and talk with the administrators.
