Riga looks into public water

The possibility of public water was recently discussed by Town of Riga officials.

"The town engineer made a presentation regarding public water," Supervisor Pamela Moore said.

There were about 70 residents in attendance and following a question and answer session between the board and the residents, a vote was taken by the town board authorizing Moore to give the go-ahead to the engineer to complete a feasibility study.

"We're hoping the study will be done by September or October and that will include the data gathering and preparation of preliminary cost estimates for installing public water in areas of the town where it doesn't presently exist."

Moore said she thought the action was a positive step and one which a large number of residents have expressed concern about. The public will be involved in this process and a committee including citizens will be appointed to work with the engineer in this phase.

"I am pleased to see the level of public participation and the positive tone of the meetings," Moore said. "This is a hot button issue and despite that, the meetings have been very productive with a healthy exchange of ideas and input with the public."
