FUSE aids in
safety education

Over 150 children received photo identification cards and had their finger prints registered by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, toured fire safety trailers, received smoke and carbon dioxide detectors, practiced calling 911, rode the "Convincer," a crash simulator, and chatted with "Sparky" the talking fire safety dog at Safety Day in Hamlin. The events were all part of the Sunday offerings at the Hamlin Firemen's Carnival. A country music jamboree and a karaoke contest were also going on simultaneously on the last day of the carnival, August 6.

Several public safety organizations joined together to provide a wide variety of information and experiences. In addition to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, the New York State Police had the crash simulator to show the impact of a 7 MPH crash on an unbelted person. Monroe County 911 brought a simulator that allowed children to practice an emergency call. The New York State Park Police brought information about safe boating and camping.

A new organization called Firemen United for Safety Education (FUSE) brought two fire safety trailers, "Sparky" the fire dog, an interactive robot and a dozen firemen from six departments who are experienced in providing safety education. "FUSE is a great asset to Monroe and Orleans Counties. Fire Departments have been helping each other at fires for decades, now we are helping each other prevent them," said John Deserto, Hamlin fireman and member of FUSE. "I couldn't pull all this together alone; all the FUSE members bring unique equipment and talents to all of our communities. For example, today the Clarendon Fire Department went and towed a safety trailer from Henrietta for this event in Hamlin."

The great weather on Sunday brought a record number of people to the Hamlin Firemen's Carnival and allowed lots of people to enjoy the last day of the carnival, Deserto said.
