Remembering 9/11
Third graders in Deb Koehler's class in Holley were only three years old when the events of 9/11 happened, so they had plenty of questions when Albion Firefighter Sarah Miesner, who is also their student teacher, wore her uniform to class on September 11. Miesner helped open the discussion by reading the book "September 12th - We Knew Everything Would Be Alright," written by the first grade class of H. Byron Masterson Elementary School in Kennett School District, Missouri. The book is about what happened the day after September 11, and how the students found comfort in experiencing a typical school day and coming home to their parents. After reading the book, Koehler's students then talked about something bad that happened to them and when they knew that everything would be alright. The activity gave students an opportunity to relate text to world events and to themselves. Shown are students (top to bottom) Ashley Nenni, Mikayla Hargreaves and Amber Barson. Submitted photo.
