A Veteran's Day tribute
Holley Social Studies Teacher Sara Capen sent out an e-mail to her fellow staff members before Veteran's Day, request the names of service men and women, and the names of veterans, whether they saw combat or not. She then compiled a list for the U.S History students, so they could each choose someone to whom they could write a letter. "Many of the students saw someone on the list they know - a family member, friend or someone who graduated from Holley," said Capen.
Students wrote about the respect and appreciation they have for those who have served this country. "What you do for your country is outstanding," wrote Ashley Loiacono. "You are very strong, brave and loved." Pam Steele wrote, "I am sure some people don't give you enough credit for being in the U.S.M.C. during the Vietnam War, but you deserve a lot! Thank you so much." Jessica Peak wrote to someone currently serving in Iraq. "It takes a lot for someone to do what you're doing now. Everything is so unexpected; you don't know what will happen. Please be safe and keep fighting."
Just after Veteran's Day, Capen received a phone call from a WWII veteran in Florida who was so grateful to receive the students' cards that he had his daughter look up Capen's phone number on the Internet using the address on the mailing label. "He said he is 85-years-old and has never received a thank you for his service," said Capen. Students sent out more than 60 cards and planned to send even more for the holidays.
