Lucy and her puppies.

Dog patrol officer seeks community support in puppy care, adoption

Walt Barker found a pregnant beagle abandoned on a back road in Clarkson about two weeks before Thanksgiving. He turned the year-and-a-half old dog over to Kathy Beaumont, Sweden-Clarkson Dog Patrol Officer, who named her Lucy.

On Thanksgiving Day, Lucy had six puppies, three black and white and three brown and white. They will be ready for adoption beginning January 20. "All the puppies are beautiful and doing well," according to Beaumont, who calls them "the spice kids" naming the girls Clove, Ginger and Cinnamon, and the boys Pepper, Sage and Nutmeg. Beaumont hates to see pet abandonment, but she is counting on the human instincts of others to complete this rescue effort.

Beaumont is seeking individuals to adopt the puppies. Those interested are cautioned to think carefully about the long-range commitment of dog ownership (see Lollypop Farm web site for items to consider: www.Lollypop.org; go to Adoptable Animals). Those adopting will receive a New York state spaying-neutering voucher that provides a discount for that service at any veterinary clinic. Barker, who works maintenance in Northampton Park, has claimed Lucy, after her puppies are gone.

Local Boy Scout Troops #471, #974 and #976 are contributing to the care of the puppies. They will participate with Kathy in bathing the puppies as partial requirement for a merit badge.

Beaumont is grateful for towels and blankets that have been contributed and would welcome more delivered to the dog shelter at 40 White Road or the Town of Sweden offices on State Street in Brockport.

Citizens can also help with the vet bills for required medical treatment (worming, shots, etc.) of the six puppies and Lucy, totaling more than $400. "The vet's fees are not in the Dog Patrol Officer's budget, so they are pro-rated to the people adopting. By citizens' direct contributions to the vet's bill, costs are kept affordable for adopting families," Beaumont said.

Make donations directly to Clarkson Veterinary Hospital (Memo line: Lucy & puppies), 8344 Ridge Road West, Brockport, NY 14420, by January 20. The Dog Patrol Officer cannot receive monetary donations.
