Cadet 1st Class (senior) Michael Bush, a Hilton native, played a major role to help his team win the National Collegiate Parachuting Championships at Lake Wales, Florida, December 27 to January 1.
The Wings of Blue, the Air Force Academy's Competition Parachute Team, set a new national record with 116 points, winning 32 medals, including nine gold. The win was the team's 28th national championship.
Bush was crowned the National Collegiate Champion for the competition, taking home five medals himself. He took silver in the team accuracy and individual accuracy categories, and gold in the freefall style, the four-way formation and in the overall category.
As a team, Air Force swept the highly competitive four-way formation event, won five out of six medals in the individual style event and took second and third in the team accuracy event. All of the team members gave up their winter vacations to prepare for and compete in the nationals with the Wings of Blue.
