Holley man recognized for service

Jack Curtis, of Holley, received the Orleans County Fire Police Association's Fire Police Award of the Year 2006. He served as vice president of Monroe and president of Orleans County Fire Police Association. Lorne O. Day, chairman of the nominating committee, said, "Jack had a major stroke and he came back to sell more tickets for our drawing than the rest of us put together."

Curtis joined the Morton Fire Department in 1955 when he was 18 years-old. He held numerous line office positions from lieutenant, captain, assistant chief, to chief from 1970 to 1980. He helped organize the Morton Explorers Post, served nine years as fire commissioner, 11 years as fire chief and more than 10 years on the fire police squad. He served as vice president of battalion, Monroe County Fire Police.

Curtis currently serves as president of Orleans County Fire Police, captain of fire police in Morton. "He takes his job seriously and when his pager goes off he is gone," Day said. "He makes sure his men have the best and safest equipment and best training."

He celebrated 50 years in 2005 with the Morton Fire Department. He received a citation from Senator George D. Maziarz, a Resolution of Appreciation from the Town of Hamlin, Certificate of Special Recognition from Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and many others. "And with all this managed, with the help of wife Rosalie, to have four healthy and happy children," Day said. "He now has six grandchildren and a great grandchild on the way. He has had a full life with its shares of ups and downs but stayed on top. He came back from having the stroke and is our president."
