Rangers win 10th consecutive Barnard
Spencerport sent ten of their fifteen wrestlers into the semi-finals, six into the finals and crowned four class champions on their way to their tenth consecutive and 19th overall Clayton Barnard Memorial Wrestling Tournament held at Hilton. In total, 18 teams competed.
The Rangers' Justin Melia used pins in all four rounds to take the 96 lb. title. Matt Piedmonte finished first for the second straight year on an overtime takedown with just ten seconds remaining at 112 lbs. Not to be outdone, Chris Collura also won his second Barnard title with an 8-4 decision at 135 lbs. And Bryan Bourne took just 35 seconds into his final bout to win with his fourth tournament pin at 160 lbs.
Chris Vigliotti finished second at 152 lbs. and Paul Glover second at 189, while Steve Joerger and Paul Morabito took third at 103 and 130 lbs., respectively. Spencerport finished with 272.50 points.
Host Hilton placed six wrestlers in the finals and finished second with 187.5 points. Mark Ranzenbach tied a school record with his third consecutive Barnard title with an 8-1 win at 130 lbs. Any Antonucci earlier won three straight from 1987-89. At 152 lbs. John Velieri avenged a defeat in the finals last season with a come-from-behind 4-3 win on a takedown with 38 seconds left.
The Cadets' Marty Grizzanti took third at 140 lbs.; Joe Rotella was third at 160 lbs. and Scott Allis third at 189 lbs.
Holley was fourth with 125 points highlighted by Demetrius Mendes 275 lb. title on a take down with three seconds remaining in overtime. Quinton Murphy (96 lb.), Tim Banks (112 lb.), Matt Sanders (140 lb.) and Ken Ryan (130 lb.) all finished second.
