"Children of the Civil War" talk
planned at Seymour Library
Donna Payne will talk on "Children of the Civil War" at the Seymour Library, 161 East Avenue, Brockport, on Thursday, February 8, at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society and is free and open to the public.
Some of Payne's subjects include: the children of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln; a poem about three brothers from the South killed in the war; and a 16-year-old child prodigy of that era who sculpted a full statue of Lincoln. Also, "The Orphans of Gettysburg" is a story of an anonymous soldier killed in action while carrying photos of his three children. His widow did not know he died until she saw photos of the children in a magazine. She started an orphanage for children of soldiers.
Payne, of Pavilion, is a student of the Civil War and founding president of the Genesee Valley Civil War Round Table which began in 1990 and now numbers about 60 members. Her interest in Civil War history began when her parents would take her on tours of the South each year.
