Rangers fall in OT

Spencerport has already won two more games than all of last season, but that didn't make dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to the Greece Lightning any easier.

Greece took a 1-0 lead in the first period converting a Ranger turnover with a tip-in by Matt Kommeth at the 1:52 mark. Spencerport tied the game at 12:01 of the first when John DiMartino took a pass from Stephen Doud in the slot and found the top left corner of the net. Sean DeMers also was credited with an assist on the play.

In the second period, Spencerport freshman goaltender Jimmy Allen made a point blank glove save and stopped two breakaways within a three minute span before the Lightning broke through with a six-on-four delayed penalty power play tally at the 10:36 mark.

The Rangers tied the game halfway through the third period when Doud's pass from the corner was deflected past the goaltender's leg pad by Mike Gionta. DiMartino was also given an assist for his second point of the game.

Spencerport killed off three minor penalties over the final four minutes of regulation including a 5-on-3 for 45 seconds to send the game into overtime. With 90 seconds remaining in the extra session, Dave Beaty's shot from the point found the net for the game-winning goal.

"I thought we might be able to pull it out after we killed those penalties late in the game," said Spencerport second-year head coach Brian Fedele.

The team has been involved in 9 one-goal games this season with no active seniors on the roster with the early-season injury to team captain Dan Otto, who they hope to have back for the playoffs.

Allen stopped 24 of 27 shots in net for the Rangers, who fell to 5-7-3 on the season.
