Rangers take battle of top teams
New York State's top ranked wrestling team - Spencerport - didn't allow a single point through the first three matches and won the first six on their way to a 31-14 victory over 12th ranked Brockport.
The Rangers Justin Melia and Matt Piedmonte each took 2-0 decisions at 103 and 112 pounds respectively. Melia registered a takedown in overtime to win his match while Piedmonte scored a reverse in the third period.
At 119 pounds, Joe Thomas won an easy 8-0 decision and Nick Terenzi followed at 125 pounds with a 5-1 win on a pair of takedowns and an escape. Paul Morabito scored two points in each period on his way to a 6-2 victory at 130 pounds and Chris Collura held off a late rally for a 10-6 win to finish the run at 135 pounds.
Brockport's Josh Oyer stopped the bleeding with a come-from-behind 8-5 win on an overtime takedown and reverse at 140 pounds and John Martin Cannon registered eight takedowns in his 19-8 win at 145 pounds.
The Rangers then put the match away with four consecutive wins beginning with Chris Vigliotti at 152 pounds by a 10-2 count. At 160 pounds Bryan Bourne won 17-2 before Justin Putt scored a takedown in overtime for a 3-1 decision at 171 pounds.
The Blue Devils won the final two bouts with Christian Boley taking a 6-2 decision at 189 pounds with five points in the second period and Erik Schuth easily winning at 215 pounds 10-1.
The Rangers improved to 12-0 with the victory and Brockport fell to 4-4 with all four losses to teams ranked in the top ten in the state.
