Endeavors of many help student earn money for school trip to France
Rachel Maynard, a senior at Hilton High School, set a goal to raise $4,000 by April for a field trip to Europe.
Maynard heard about the tour through school and her French teacher. Anyone is allowed to attend, however, the funds were to be paid solely by the individual.
The initial deposit of $700 was to be paid within two weeks from the announcement of the tour. Maynard's mother, Barbara, is disabled and did not have the money to give to her daughter.
"I went home and called my Grandma, Grandpa and other family and friends," Maynard said.
Maynard and her mother were surprised that she came up with the money for the down payment but she still had over $2,000 more to raise.
"I'm going through the first month thinking this seems like something fun to be able to do," said Maynard, "but I didn't think we'd do it."
Maynard continued to find ways to raise money. She asked her neighbor who belongs to the VFW and the American Legion if he knew anyone who was willing to donate cash. The neighbor gave her a list of names.
"I wrote up a letter asking people if they wanted to donate money," Maynard said.
A few people responded as well as the groups and sent her funds. Maynard's family also worked together to come up with the rest. They helped collect and redeem bottles and cans after the holidays.
"We fed them into the machines and caused a backup in the machine area at Big M," Maynard said.
Maynard's uncle and brother helped out while her mother was in the hospital for surgery. The family has come together to make it possible for her to go to Europe this spring.
"It's been a family adventure," said Barbara. "We just don't have the money to contribute, but if she's willing to work, we're willing to help."
Maynard has sold candy outside Big M on a cold day and works for a local drug store. She has managed to save $1,000 herself and has successfully raised the money to go.
"I paid for the trip itself to go there but I need about $800 more," said Maynard for spending money, and, "I have to eat."
