Clarkson highway department bridge-building efforts recognized
In addition to maintaining the roadways in the Town of Clarkson, members of the department of public works have undertaken several projects at the county level. Their most recent one, reconstruction of the North Greece Road Bridge over Northrup Creek, won them the American Public Works Association (APWA) Small Project of the Year award.
"The town's highway department entered into a contract with the County of Monroe Department of Transportation to replace a bridge on North Greece Road," Goodwin said.
The project included the demolition of the existing bridge structure and construction of a new one. It involved the crews damming the creek and diverting its flow while they completed the work. Town crews also had to readjust the approaches to the bridge on both sides.
The bridge was designed by an engineering firm and the money to replace the bridge was part of Monroe County's transportation budget. Goodwin said his department had completed a similar project - on a smaller scale - the year prior, on the same road. "Based on our past performance, the Clarkson highway department was approached by Monroe County to undertake the project," he said.
In June 2006 the Clarkson highway department began the relocation of a 16-inch water main and began demolishing the bridge. On September 15, tractor-trailers delivered the bridge sections, a 100-ton mobile crane was put in place and the construction of the new bridge began.
The bridge was reopened to traffic on October 27.
Goodwin said that the town was paid for labor and equipment based on its all seasons work agreement with the town. "Monroe County DOT paid for all materials used in the project," he said. "The combination of the town's experienced labor force, town-owned equipment and the county's contacts with local suppliers, it was an efficient, cost-effective project for both municipalities."
