Golden Eagles second in ECAC
Brockport advanced to the ECAC Women's Basketball championship game for the first time in the program's history, but dropped a 68-60 decision to William Smith in front of 300 fans at SUNY Brockport.
The second-seed Golden Eagles defeated RIT and Oswego in the first two rounds to advance and break a 0-4 record in previous trips to the postseason tourney.
Brockport trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but cut that to 48-43 at halftime. Courtney Hines tied the game 50-50 with eight minutes remaining and gave the Golden Eagles a 55-52 lead with another shot from long distance with 6:20 remaining.
The two teams were tied 57-57 with 4:17 left, but the Herons allowed just three points to the Golden Eagles the rest of the way - all on free throws.
The game featured two lead changes and seven ties in the wild second half.
Hines led all scorers with 26 points, 17 in the second half. Brenlyn Campbell was right at her scoring average with 11 points while Kaomi Matthews scored eight and Ashley Broadhurst six. The Golden Eagles played without SUNYAC First Team All-Conference senior guard Katie Marcella who was out with an injury.
In addition to Marcella, Broadhurst was also named First Team All-Conference at guard and junior Kim Schon received honorable mention.
Brockport finished their campaign with a 22-8 record and will lose two seniors in Liz Ferenczy, who played 20 minutes and hauled down five rebounds, and Marcella.
