Resident wants stop sign removed
Less than one month after they were installed, a resident of the Village of Brockport who lives on Brookdale Road wants the stop signs removed. "Is it legal to use these stop signs to slow traffic?" Jean Moszak asked board members at the March 19 meeting. She was questioning the stop signs village workers installed between house numbers 51 and 59 on Brookdale as a way to deter drivers who regularly speed down that stretch of road.
She quoted from vehicle and traffic law that she said shows the signs do not belong on Brookdale. "None of the regulations or reasons cited for installing a stop sign exist on Brookdale Road," she said. "You can't use stop signs for speed control and that was the reason given. This is a nuisance to the residents on this street."
Mayor Mort Wexler said village officials would have to check on the issues Moszak raised.
At the February 26 meeting, Brookdale Road resident Jack Mazzarella requested the signs' installation saying they were "necessary for the safety of the children in the area" even though it meant he would have to come to a complete stop before turning into his driveway. "That inconvenience means nothing compared to the safety of the children on our road," Mazzarella said at the February meeting.
While Police Chief Dan Varrenti didn't comment at the March 19 meeting, he had said during the February meeting that stop signs were meant to stop traffic, not slow it down. He had said, "I just want to caution against using stop signs to control speeding."
No action was taken by the board on the removal of the signs.
