Spencerport wrestler wins national championship
Spencerport wrestler Bryan Bourne won the 160 pound junior class national championship at the NHSCA (National High School Coaches Association) national wrestling championships at Virginia Beach. Bourne, a high school junior All-American wrestler, defeated the 160 pound junior class state champion from Ohio 3-2 in the finals on Friday, March 30.
This is Bourne's second national championship. In July, he won the Junior National title at 160 pounds going undefeated at the National High School Wrestling Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. Spencerport Rangers Varsity Wrestling Coach Bill Jacoutot said, "Bourne's performance has established him as one of the premier wrestlers in the United States. This is a tribute to his commitment and talent."
More than 1,500 wrestlers from across the nation hit the mats for the championships. That total includes record turnouts of 705 competitors for the National Juniors Championships. The finals featured 19 of the 28 finalists owning at least one state or National Prep championship in their careers. Three of the finals matched multi-time state champions. Bourne's New York team of top wrestlers from around the state finished second in the team rankings.
