Soap box derby coming back to Brockport
With the popularity of the Soap Box derby that came to Brockport last year, organizers are looking to bring the event back in August. Dave Jewell, a member of the Brockport Rotary, addressed village officials regarding the event's return the weekend of August 25 and 26. The race will again be held in the Smith Street bridge area.
He asked that homeowners in the area be notified prior to the race. "Last year we had some homeowners who seemed surprised when we showed up," he said.
Jewell said the organizers would like to look at expanding the derby by allowing a limited number of vendors to set up booths in the park during the race time. "We'd like to see some craft vendors or shop owners from the Brockport area," he said, adding that the Rotary will be hosting its chicken barbecue during the race.
Resident Mary Jo Nayman questioned the feasibility of bringing in food vendors with the number of geese that regularly gather in the area.
Trustee Carrie Maziarz asked whether organizers would be interested in holding the race to coincide with the Arts Festival. "We're concerned with the safety issues with the increased traffic in the area," Jewell said.
Village officials were going to discuss Jewell's request for vendor booths at a workshop.
In other matters, the board:
Heard form John Lessord who asked that the cement block, with wires coming out of it, be taken care of. "The mess at the corner of Lyman and Fayette make this the worst looking area of the village," he said.
Maziarz said the farmers market had received its second installment of the $4,000 that Senator George Maziarz had secured for marketing of the event. "This year we already have special events scheduled for six of the 20 weekends the market will run," she said.
Maziarz also thanked the police and fire department for the quick response time when her son was involved in a bicycle/car accident. "He was knocked unconscious, broke his elbow and the response time and the treatment he received was second to none," she said.
