Cadets shut out Penfield
Gavin Black and Jake Swanson combined on a two-hitter and Hilton scored all three runs with two outs in the second inning en route to a 3-0 victory over Penfield in varsity baseball.
The sophomore lefthander Black allowed just two hits and struck out seven batters over his six innings of work to pick up his first win of the season. Swanson kept the Patriots off balance with a great breaking ball and picked up the save in the seventh.
In the home half of the second inning, second baseman Jake Coleman drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Right fielder Brian Duffy then laced a two-out single to left scoring Coleman. A double by leadoff hitter Jon Schwind put runners at second and third and the Cadets scored their second run of the inning with a bit of gamesmanship.
With the pitch Schwind decoyed a steal of third and fell down on purpose drawing a throw from the Penfield catcher. With the throw, Duffy broke from third and beat the return throw at the plate and Schwind advanced to third on the double steal.
Designated hitter Corey McEvoy followed with an RBI single scoring Schwind for the final run of the game.
In the Penfield fourth, Duffy made a great running catch in the right-center field gap to steal extra bases. The Patriots were held without a hit after the third inning.
The Cadets improved to 3-2 after a 1-2 southern trip during spring break with both losses coming in extra innings.
