Holley students engineer a win at RIT competition

Thirty-eight Holley students in grades 6-8 competed with students from around the Rochester area at the E3 Fair at Rochester Institute of Technology. Sponsored by the Rochester Society of Engineers, the engineering fair gives students three options to test their robotics skills.

Holley students competed in the second and third options and received trophies in both. For the Stationery Power Lift option, students made a crane that would lift as many weights as possible in a 30-second time period. The team of Jessi Kimmerly, Sam Mauro and Zach Vickerson took fourth place out of 43 teams by lifting just over two pounds with their Lego brick crane.

For the Robotics option, students had to program a robot to remove seven weighted pop cans from a three-foot diameter circle in under three minutes. The Holley team of Julie Brooks, Kaitlyn Hendry, Jennie Hundley and Meaghan White placed fourth out of 24 teams, removing all seven cans in 31 seconds. Both teams received trophies to take home as well as trophies to display at each of the schools.
