Elmer (Duke) Wolfrom, 93

One of Hilton's best known citizens died May 8, 2007. Elmer (Duke) Wolfrom was 93 years old, a lifelong resident of our village which he loved and served in many ways over the years.

During World War II, Duke, having earned his pilot's license, taught flying lessons. In later years, he was on the Hilton school board for many terms. In 1970, he accompanied the Hilton Marching Band to Expo 70 in Japan. Duke was a member of the Hilton Planning Board for many terms. Although never a fireman, Duke was a social member of the Hilton Fire Department.

Duke was a jovial, friendly guy who knew everyone on Main Street and always had a cheerful greeting. His career was in sales for Metropolitan Life Insurance, a perfect job as he was definitely a people person.

When he and his wife, Joyce, lived on West Avenue, they had an annual parade night picnic for their friends who came to watch the parade with Wolfroms. Duke would grill the hot dogs and everyone brought a dish to pass. When the Wolfroms sold their home to move to Village II, my husband, Fred, and I continued the parade night picnics tradition here on Brook Street. We all took our chairs, walked up to the corner, and closed off the street to watch the parade. Many people marching or driving would wave and yell, "Hi Duke!"

There was a group of retirees who met daily at the Family Restaurant for coffee at 3 p.m. They had many laughs and stories to tell. Part of their ritual was to flip a coin for the coffee bill. Duke was a part of that group, too.

Duke was also a volunteer in the Hamlin parade. When the Hamlin firemen had their annual parade, Duke and his friend, Bruce Hilton, marched in the pa-rade behind the horses acting as "pooper scoopers." This was truly an act of community service for both of these men.

In recent years, Duke walked from Hilton East to the restaurant every Tuesday morning to have breakfast during the summer with many of his friends returning from their winter in the south.

Though he didn't have a big family, Hilton was his family - his life.
