Spencerport educator to retire
Assistant Superintendent for Instruction at the Spencerport School District, Dr. Bernadette Skobjak's resignation was accepted by the board of education on May 22. She plans to retire in September and has been with the district since 1999.
In her role, Skobjak directed all academic programs in grades kindergarten through 12, including career and technical education, special education, staff development, student services and student data management. She also managed home instruction, textbook selection and field trip approvals.
"Bernadette is a truly amazing educator," said Mary Anne Kermis, superintendent of schools. "She mixes a blend of extreme professionalism with a deep caring for the welfare of each individual student. She has improved student performance and teacher training here in Spencerport for the last eight and a half years. Bernadette will be greatly missed by all who have worked with her."
Skobjak plans to continue to write, teach and consult with districts and schools to indulge her passion for improving the systems and development of leaders in education. She will continue as a member of the Board of Directors of the Rochester Hearing and Speech Center.
While at the district she established goals and focused instruction on improving student achievement and developed and managed the systems needed to align all programs with NYS standards, assessments and graduation requirements. She led the development and implementation of the School-wide Enrichment model and the planning to align instruction with the District's Strategic Plan.
Her career in education began as a teacher in the Buffalo-area district of Hamburg and also worked for 12 years at the Greece schools.
