Remembering veterans
Memorial Day is the time we remember the nation's fallen heroes and give thanks to those that served and are serving in the armed forces. The Sackett-Merrill-White American Legion and Auxiliary - Post and Unit 575 in Bergen, visited area cemeteries to place flags at the graves of Legionnaires and to place flags and plant geraniums at the graves of Auxiliary members. Both Legion and Auxiliary members marched in the Bergen and Byron Memorial Day parades. The American Legion's parade float theme was: Youth of Today - Future of Tomorrow. In keeping with that theme, riding on the float were members of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Auxiliary's Girl's State representative. Active service members from the Army (Staff Sgt. Chad D. Waterman, Staff Sgt. Allen Raner, Specialist Janelle Rinaldo) and Marines (Sgt. John Lanphear, Cpl. Joseph Lanphear) were invited to participate in the parade. Also in the parade were veterans from WWII: Clarence (Mac) Gardner and Ed Perrine, and Korea: George Cunningham and Ray Keenan. The Legion's float is pictured.
