"I love to bake. It's my passion!" said Kathy Hundley of Hamlin when she learned she had won the Brockport Sidewalk Fair's Chocolate Chip Cookie Contest. Of the two plates of cookies she entered, the winner was "Everybody's Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies." "One of my entries was a recipe I modified with blueberries and chocolate chips," she said as her fiancé Kimm, looked on. "Whenever I take her baked goods to work, they disappear in less than a hour. Her cookies have a reputation," he said.

The self-taught baker teaches Home and Career classes at Brockport Middle School. When she saw the newspaper ad for the street fair and baking contest, she felt compelled to enter. "I am really almost obsessed with baking," she admits. "I bake every day and even started a baking club at school this year. Winning this contest will show my students how you can turn something you do well into something other people value and recognize."

Hundley's prize was a gift certificate for lunch for four at the Red Bird Tea Shoppe in Brockport. Tea Shoppe owner and cookie contest co-coordinator Jo Matela said there were 22 entries made by 21 bakers from the area. Each entry consisted of two dozen cookies displayed in various containers. Judges for the event were: Village Trustee Carrie Maziarz, Pastor Mark Mutton of the Brockport Free Methodist Church and Matela. Judges tasted a small sample of each entry and made their decision based on taste, appearance and originality. "Every entry was good," said Matela. "We have a lot of terrific bakers in this area and we are pleased that so many people took part in the contest."

Second and third place winners will receive gift baskets featuring Crabtree & Evelyn Products donated by the Red Bird. Second and third place winners were Jenna DelGallego and Cheryl Connally.

Cookies that remained after the judging were donated to the Brockport Fire Department and Dispatch office and the Brockport Police Department in appreciation for the extra duty they served during annual Street Fair activities as well as children and adults taking part in the festivities on Market Street.
