attends Girls State
Girls State, a citizenship training program for high school juniors, was founded in 1947 by the American Legion Auxiliary. It uses practical experience to teach about government processes from the local to the state level, emphasizing the responsibilities of each individual as a citizen in a democracy. It is held each summer in 49 states. Empire Girls State was held on the SUNY Brockport Campus.
The American Legion Auxiliary, Sackett-Merrill-White Unit 575 (Bergen) representative was Ashley Elliott of Byron. Elliott will be a senior at Byron-Bergen High School in September and is active in both school and community. She participates in school sports, both as a basketball and soccer player as well as volunteering to train/referee third and fourth grade girls/boys basketball and assist where needed at varsity wrestling events.
Elliott has also been involved with the Peer Literacy Program, reading with and to other students. She was an assistant for the Genesee Valley Board of Cooperative Education Services, working on a 10th Grade Career Day event. She was selected as Class Representative in both 2002 and 2003 for the Youth Leadership Conference.
Elliott is active in the Genesee County Republican Women's Club in Batavia, and has attended the Biennial Convention - National Federation of Republican Women.
She is a graduate of Ledgedale Flight School with a certified solo permit and is currently working on training in cross country, flight plan, navigation and instrumentation.
Elliott will be attending the United States Naval Academy summer seminar. Her future plans are to attend the Naval Academy, majoring in Aeronautical Engineering, and to serve her country.
