Park Avenue bridge work causes move Work on the Park Avenue bridge in the Village of Brockport (shown right), a project begun August 13 and continuing through mid-September, has caused the temporary relocation of the Farmers Market. The market is open every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October. “In order to accommodate public safety and have access to the fire department, the market will move to the North Water Street parking lot (by the Welcome Center) on the banks of the Erie Canal,” Village Manager Ian Coyle said. Letters were sent to residents and property owners in the area letting them know that the Water Street municipal parking lot will be closed to parking from 2 a.m. through 3 p.m. Sundays from August 19 until the Park Avenue bridge is re-opened. DOT officials closed the Park Avenue bridge for repair work. New York State Canal Corporation personnel will replace 12 aging counter weight cables, replace pit covers and rehabilitate the northwest sheave. The lifting mechanism will be thoroughly greased and the lifting frame will be painted, according to the NYSDOT. The village’s Smith Street bridge has been closed to traffic because it was deemed structurally unsound for traffic. No decision has been made on whether the village will eventually take ownership of the bridge if repairs are completed by the DOT and no decision has been made as to whether the DOT will complete repairs on the Smith Street span. © August 19, 2007 - Westside News Inc. |
