Brockport offers WiFi at the waterfront
The Village of Brockport, through equipment donations from Sunnking Recycling and assistance from the Greater Brockport Development Corporation, has installed free wireless Internet access at the Welcome Center at Harvester Park.
Brockport continues to draw upon its canal heritage, and array of waterfront amenities, to improve and expand upon community development offerings in the village. "It's a win-win," said Village Manager Ian Coyle. "We are providing a service for our visitors and nearby residents and helping our merchants - and it's not costing our residents a penny."
WiFi service is the latest in a series of amenities to be offered at the Welcome Center including water and electric hookups, restrooms, laundry facilities, free bicycle and wagon rentals and showers. Duane Beckett, CEO of Sunnking, designed and created the wireless system. Although the system has a security firewall built into it, people who log on to the Internet through the Brockport's Wi-Fi connection are advised to maintain their own firewalls and anti-virus software for protection. The system is designed so that dozens of users can be logged on at any one time.
"With over 2,000 people partaking in the Lois McClure activities, I think the Brockport area is recognizing that the waterfront is not just for boaters," said Coyle. "WiFi is another service offering aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Brockport and a technological welcome mat for visitors, college students and residents to come to the Welcome Center at Harvester Park and log on."
Carmella R. Mantello, director of the New York State Canal Corporation, said, "Brockport joins a growing number of canal communities that are looking to the future by adding free Wi-Fi service at their harbors to attract more boaters and visitors to the canal system. Many travelers on the canal system are visiting from long distances and free Wi-Fi will allow them to stay in touch and receive important news and information during their trip. We commend Brockport for adding this important visitor amenity to their canalfront."
