No increase in tax rates in Hilton school district
Hilton Central School District Board of Education approved the school tax rates for the 2007-08 year at its August 7 meeting. The board approved rates reflect no increase to the tax rate in three of the district's towns- Parma, Greece and Clarkson. "We were successfully able to secure payment of several pending state aid claims and the board saw this as an opportunity to eliminate the projected tax rate increases of about 1.7 percent and instead maintained the same tax rates for the second year in a row," said Hilton Assistant Superintendent for Business Steven Ayers. "Hamlin's equalization rate dropped further, which caused their rate to rise by 4.27 percent despite the application of the extra state aid to the tax levy."
The 2007-08 Hilton School District budget proposal approved by voters in May totaled $63,973,334. Variations in each of the district's four towns' tax rates reflect New York State Bureau of Equalization and Assessment equalization rates which are set each year in Albany. This rate equalizes the amount paid in each town by owners of homes of equal market value. A home's assessed value is determined by the town's assessor based on structural formulas and market value. Questions about assessment are addressed by the town's assessor's office. Tax rates are estimated by the district based on information supplied by each town's assessor, the estimated amount of state aid, county sales tax estimates, and other revenue sources.
