Collier scores five TDs for C-C
Senior running back Averin Collier scored three first-half touchdowns and five overall as Churchville-Chili outscored a pesky Spencerport squad 42-20.
On their second possession, Collier staked the Saints to a 7-0 lead on a 67-yard touchdown run. Spencerport came right back to tie the game on their next possession on a two minute drive highlighted by a 34 yard pass to Quentin Brunson set up by a seal block by the wide receiver. Quarterback Justin Putt capped the drive with a 12-yard keeper for the touchdown.
Collier then took a third down run 43 yards to the Rangers 4-yard line before scoring for a 14-7 lead.
In the second quarter, the Saints made it 21-7 helped by Chris Vitale's 56-yard run and finished by Collier's nine-yard touchdown run.
The Rangers came right back on their next possession with a long 15-play drive including two fourth down conversions with Putt keeping the ball from the one-yard line for the touchdown. The extra point attempt hit the upright.
After the kickoff, C-C scored on their next play from scrimmage following a 40-yard return by Collier on a 48 yard touchdown pass from Matt Szczupakowski to Mike Laurri.
Collier scored his fourth touchdown in the third quarter. Spencerport then scored their final points on another long drive helped by two roughing the punter penalties. Putt found Jarryl Carley on a 17 yard TD pass to cut the Saints lead to 15 points, but Collier scored again to put the game out of reach.
"We made a lot of mistakes and Spencerport played a great game and were well-coached," said Saints head coach Paul Dick. "We made a lot of mental errors and didn't tackle well, but we'll fix what's broken. Our expectations are high and we'll improve."
Putt was 18-28 and threw for 250 yards with an additional 32 yards rushing for the Rangers. Running back Christian Zemaitis rushed for 64 yards and Carley caught six passes for 79 yards.
The Saints, who improved to 2-0, were led by Collier with 184 yards rushing. Chris Vitale contributed 68 yards on the ground on 8 carries and Steve Dunn led the defensive effort with 9 tackles and one sack.
