Hilton Apple Fest continues commitment to community
The 27th annual Hilton Apple Fest (HAF) will take place Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30 at the grounds of the Hilton Community Center located in the Village of Hilton.
This annual event is well known to area residents and attracts over 70,000 visitors to the Hilton area throughout the HAF weekend. Whats the attraction? A host of well-planned carefully orchestrated events that attract people of all ages, like an apple pie contest, a photo contest, a car show, arts and crafts, entertainment, a vast array of food and childrens events and entertainment are what makes the Hilton Apple Fest special. More information about each of these events can be found in this special section.
Due to popular demand, festival goers can find the return of the HAF Apple Pie Contest and the HAF Photo Contest. Faye Cole, HAF Committee member, explained how these events returned to HAF. We had a lot of requests for these events. People missed these events last year. As part of the 2006 HAF, the Committee worked with another local group of photographers who created The Hilton Barn Project. The work of this team of eight photographers included more than 100 barn photographs in a special published book.
This year, The Hilton Barn Project will offer 2008 calendars for $15. According to Cole, during the 2006 HAF, the committee had to eliminate the apple pie contest and the photo contest due to lack of facility space. This year the Apple Pie Contest and the Photo Contest will be held in the Ingham Room of the Hilton Community Center where we held the Barn Project last year, she explained. The Apple Pie Contest will be held in the morning on Saturday, September 29.
Over 175 arts and crafts vendors will bring their treasures to the Hilton Apple Fest. These vendors will offer a range of artistic creations including decorative wood items, jewelry, pottery and ceramics, fine arts, painting and drawings, floral, wood, glass, mixed media, textiles, special media and clothing. HAF Board member Terry Quetschenbach described a new and unusual Hilton Apple Fest arts and crafts vendor. We have someone this year at Apple Fest who will be selling old record album covers that are made into clocks, said Quetschenbach. These arts and crafts vendors come to HAF from as far away as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois and Massachusetts and also from throughout New York.
Throughout the Hilton Apple Fest weekend, various community organizations will host activities, games and services for the children and the community. The Hilton Fire Department will be promoting fire safety and on Saturday, September 29, the community can take a tour of the Hilton Fire Department Safety Trailer. Near the main stage, the Monroe County Sheriffs Departments DARE car will be on display Saturday.
Children can find the ever popular Coreys Apple Pond at Hilton Apple Fest and pay 50 cents to pick an apple out of the pond for a prize. The prizes range in size and value and include two Razor Scooters. Burch Farms will supply 3,000 apples to fill Coreys Apple Pond. Summit Credit Union provided the funds to purchase these apples.
Local radio stations will broadcast live throughout the Hilton Apple Fest weekend, 93.3 FICKLE Radio Station on Saturday afternoon, 89.1 The Point Radio Station on Sunday and on Saturday 950 AM Legends Radio Station.
Throughout the HAF weekend, Pine Grove Farms will offer pony rides and Pettis Pools will display soft sided hot tubs. The Rochester Razorsharks Lacrosse Team will have players on hand to sign autographs and will also be raffling off season tickets.
In the Community Center on Saturday and Sunday, the Hilton Masonic Lodge will be making free Child ID tapes. The Hilton Lions Club will offer Sight First II Screening. The Sheriffs Department will fingerprint children on Sunday only. In the Board Room, the Historical Society and Village Historian will have a display of many different Hilton historical items.
Animal lovers can find Hush Puppy items at ABC Bassett Hound Rescue booth. Anyone looking for a new American flag can purchase one at American Legion Hiscock-Fishbaugh Post 788 and the Greece Historical Society will sell throws and books. The James P. Wilmot Cancer Center will raffle off a basket of goodies and Parma Abiding Love Ministries will be sell barbecue sauce.
Two new Apple Fest logos appeal to all ages
Each year the Hilton Apple Fest (HAF) Committee invites area artists to submit their designs to be used as the logo for the HAF. This year the HAF Committee chose two winners, Bobbi Prince, a local artist from Spencerport and Ryan Luce, a Hamlin resident.
Painting and drawing comes naturally to Spencerport artist Bobbie Prince, shes been painting for almost 50 years. When Prince decided to enter the 2007 Hilton Apple Fest (HAF) Logo Contest she knew she wanted to create something different, use her artistic talents and earn some money.
"One of the main reasons I entered the contest was because my son is getting married this year and I needed the money," Prince explained. The $100 prize money she earned will come in handy to help with wedding expenses. Prince also has a special connection with Hilton. "My husband, Charlie, is a Hilton native and as a child he picked apples at Kellys Farm located in the village of Hilton," she said.
Prince had submitted designs to the Apple Fest Committee in the past but was never selected. This year she did some research noting that the Apple Fest Car Show was never included in any previous HAF logo design. She came across some old photos of antique cars and trucks and, "I found a photo of an old farm truck and this was my inspiration," Prince explained. Princes design will be used for souvenirs including sweatshirts and tee shirts.
13-year old Ryan Luce entered the HAF contest for the first time this year. Ryan explained how his Dad, Edward Luce, showed him the entry information, "My Dad found the contest information in the newspaper and showed it to me one morning during breakfast. I thought it would be cool to enter, so a few weeks later I entered three different designs." Ryan loves to draw and was excited when he was chosen as an HAF Logo Contest winner. "I was ecstatic. This was the first contest I ever entered," he said.
Ryan won a $100 savings bond and his design will be placed on all AF childrens tee shirts this year. His Mom, Alison Crandell, is proud of Ryans work. "We are thrilled to pieces for him. He loves to draw. I think his winning design is a subliminal self-portrait," Crandell said. Ryan is a Hamlin resident and an 8th grader at Brockport Oliver Middle School and at age 13 he has high ambitions for his future, "I want to be an animator," he said.
According to HAF Board member Pat Clark, each year the HAF Logo Committee usually receives 15-25 logo submissions. However, this year, "The committee received 103 drawings. We had so many excellent drawings from many awesome artists," said Clark. While they had a large number of logos to choose from, the committee knew they had to choose a winner. The committee chose two winners, Prince and Ryan. "Bobbies drawing was a unique, intricate drawing; we never had anyone submit anything like it before. Ryans logo stood out from all of the childrens logo that were submitted and thats why we chose it," Clark said.
