Farewell, K9 Officer Brock

Brockport’s first police dog has died

Brockport Police Department’s retired K9 Officer Brock passed away on December 18. He was the first police dog in department history.

The German Shepherd was born on January 13, 2016, and came to Brockport from the Czech Republic via Shallow Creek Kennels in western Pennsylvania, a private police dog importing and training facility whose K9s are bred in Europe. The BPD held a social media contest in which the community chose the name Brock. He began his tour of duty on March 28, 2017, working faithfully alongside his handler, Officer Joshua Sime, until Brock’s retirement on September 4, 2025.

Brock served his community and the surrounding communities through narcotics detection, tracking, Officer protection, and evidence recovery.

The connection between Brock and Officer Sime was deep. In a 2024 profile written by Margay Blackman, Sime ticked off a long list of Brock’s outstanding qualities – temperament, intelligence, persistence, loyalty – and he readily admitted that it was all about the dog. “I spend more time with Brock than with my family; I don’t go anywhere without him,” Sime said. “I’ve never experienced a bond like this. If it were up to me, I’d be a K9 handler to the day I retire. This is who I am.”

Brock touched not only the lives of the Officers he worked with but also those of the community he served. He was a popular visitor to area schools and community events.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the law enforcement agencies who came out to show their support during K9 Brock’s services. Your presence, professionalism, and solidarity meant more than words can express,” The Brockport Police Department posted on Facebook.

“We are also deeply grateful to the members of our community who reached out with messages of condolence, kindness, and support. Every call, message, and gesture was truly appreciated and brought comfort during a difficult time.

“Seeing both law enforcement and the community stand together in honor of a fallen K9 was a powerful reminder of the respect and unity that exists among us. Thank you for honoring Brock’s service, sacrifice, and legacy.”
