January First Hike: Along the Canal in Brockport

There will be a January First Hike in Brockport on Thursday, January 1, starting at 1 p.m. Meet at the pavilion in Corbett Park (155 Clark Street) to hike along the Erie Canal Path. Parking is available on Clark Street and in a small lot on Smith Street. There are no restroom facilities.

The hike is expected to be about 1.5 to 2 miles and should take 90 minutes to two hours. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and is a great way to spend time outdoors with friends, old and new, enjoying the beauty of winter and the peacefulness along the canal, with abundant winter wildlife. Please do not bring pets.

If there is snow, various sizes of snowshoes and trekking poles will be available on a first-come, first-served basis (arrive early for sizing and to sign a waiver). Those who have their own equipment are encouraged to bring it. There will also be two Kettler snow sleds available. These sleds feature a supportive seat back, tubular side railings, and adjustable belts for the feet, waist, and upper torso. The weight limit is 220 pounds. The sleds include both a push-handle system to assist the rider and a rope system to pull the sled.

Organizers recommend that participants wear lightweight layers that are warm, durable, easy to adjust, and vent easily. Winter boots or hiking boots are the best footwear choices. Those who can carry a small pack should bring an extra layer of warm clothing, a hat, gloves, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Sunscreen is recommended. Keep phones in an inner pocket close to the body to preserve the battery.

Those planning to attend are asked to email Marleen Cain at otcbrockport@gmail.com with their name and the number in their party so they can be contacted with updated information in the event of severe weather.
