Do you like to swing weights and make noise? Looking for ways to practice eye-hand coordination and keep your mind sharp? How about doing some unusual community service? The Erie Canal Ringers handbell choir is starting its 2026-2027 season of bell ringing and hopes to welcome new members into its group.
The independent handbell choir plays both sacred and secular music. The choir has two divisions: The Red Door Ringers, a smaller ensemble that prepares music at Levels 1-2+ (out of 5) and takes the music to assisted living settings once or twice a year; and The Heavy Metal Ringers, a larger group that takes on more challenging music up to Level 5. Both groups are full of kind people who enjoy making music on a unique, accessible instrument.
The choir does not perform during church services, but both groups perform two free concerts per season. Free-will donations from the concerts have benefited the Brockport Food Shelf, Morgan-Manning House, and St. Luke’s music program.
The Red Door Ringers could use at least one more ringer and meet on Mondays, from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m., starting on September 21.
The Heavy Metal Ringers meet on Tuesdays, from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m., starting on September 22. At least two more ringers are needed for this division, and strong people are especially needed to ring the bass bells.
Substitutes are always welcome, and subbing is a good way to try out the bells and see if it’s something you like. All practices are hosted at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street, Brockport.
