Global Public Health Expert to Headline Deans’ Lecture Series

Discussing the importance of medical science, public trust, and health equity

SUNY Brockport will welcome internationally recognized public health law expert and alum Dr. Lawrence O. Gostin ’71 to campus on Thursday, October 29, for the return of its Deans’ Lecture Series, presented by Highland Hospital, part of University of Rochester Medicine.

The event will bring together health care professionals, educators, students, and community leaders to explore some of today’s most pressing public health challenges, including scientific integrity, public trust, and equitable access to health care.

Gostin is a Distinguished University Professor at Georgetown University, founding faculty director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, and director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law. A leading voice in global health policy, he has advised national and international organizations on responses to major public health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

His lecture will address the intersection of law, ethics, and public health; how misinformation influences health care decisions; and the critical role of science in shaping healthier communities.

“As presenting sponsor, Highland Hospital is proud to support conversations that advance health equity and strengthen the communities we serve,” said Kathy Parrinello, R.N., Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Highland Hospital.

Parrinello will also speak at the event, highlighting the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions and regional health care organizations in addressing today’s health care challenges.

The Deans’ Lecture Series is a returning initiative at SUNY Brockport designed to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, connect the University with distinguished thought leaders, and encourage meaningful conversations about issues impacting communities locally and globally.

SUNY Brockport’s School of Nursing hosts the event, with Highland Hospital as the presenting sponsor and Brockport Student Government as the leadership sponsor.

The event will be held on Thursday, October 29, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at SUNY Brockport’s Tower Fine Arts Center. Learn more and RSVP by visiting https://www.brockport.edu/academics/academic-affairs/deans-lecture-series/.
