Healthy kids run in Byron-Bergen Elementary School’s first Turkey Trot
Byron-Bergen Elementary students are serious about having fun and staying healthy. They proved it on November 16 as the school hosted its first Turkey Trot run/walk event. More than 90 students in grades Pre-K through six, along with many family members and school faculty got moving for the non-competitive run, choosing one-, two- or three-mile courses.
The Turkey Trot is part of the school’s strategy to promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles, and to help young children develop life-long healthy habits. The school’s Health and Wellness Committee (Physical Education teachers Danielle Carson and Brian Tatar, Assistant Principal Amanda Cook, and Principal Brian Meister) organized the event and donated healthy snacks and drinks.
Many students also enjoyed playing GoNoodle activities before and after the run. GoNoodle, an interactive computer program designed to make moving fun, is used extensively at the school to integrate physical activity into the classroom environment.
Principal Brian Meister said, “All of our young runners received special Turkey Trot certificates in honor of their great showings on the track. The run was a terrific success, largely due to the wonderful support we received from our many parent and faculty volunteers. We hope to make the Turkey Trot an annual event here at Byron-Bergen Elementary and are already planning for next year.”
