The Master Gardeners of CCE Monroe County will be hosting its 22nd Annual Gathering of Gardeners on April 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day-long event is at the DoubleTree in Rochester (1111 Jefferson Road) and includes a continental breakfast. This year’s first speaker, Joseph Tychonievich, was named one of six “young horticulturists who are helping to shape how America gardens” by “Organic Gardening” magazine. Tychonievich received his bachelor of science from Ohio State University and will be speaking on Rock Gardening: Reimagining a Classic Style and Cool, Non-Wimpy Plants You Haven’t Heard Of. His popular books will be available for purchase and signing.
Next, Carol Southby will discuss Combining Plants for Special Effects. She is a garden designer and natural areas consultant, specializing in landscaping with perennials, native plants and plants for butterflies. She studied horticulture in England and has a bachelor of science in natural sciences. Her fascination with plant biology and plants in their natural habitat are a major influence on her presentations and garden designs.
The symposium also features a unique and unusual plant sale all day in the adjoining parking lot. It is open to the public. Specialty vendors will bring items related to this year’s presentations. In addition to the sale, there will be auction items to delight the garden enthusiast. These items cover a wide range from a large gas grill donated by Home Depot to smaller garden tools, art and crafts. There is something for everyone.
The Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension are volunteer men and women trained by Cornell Cooperative Extension in the science and art of gardening, as part of a nation-wide education and service program. Master Gardeners are members of the upstate community. They take an interest in gardens, landscape and the environment at large.
