Kyle Foelsch is the winner of the 2018 New York State Recreation and Parks Friends Foundation Scholarship award. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in recreation and leisure studies with a concentration in therapeutic recreation at The College at Brockport.
His background includes a military career in the US Army where he retired and received an honorable discharge at the rank of staff sergeant, was an honor graduate at One Station Unit Training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and received the Non-Commissioned Officer of the Month honors with Bravo Company at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His service included two tours of Iraq and three of Afghanistan.
Now approaching his senior year, Foelsch is currently a dean’s list student with honors at Brockport and is the 2017 recipient of the Genesee Valley Recreation and Park Society Dr. Christine Z. Howe Memorial Scholarship. Through his chosen field of study, Foelsch began to heal himself of injuries sustained during his military service. At the same time, he discovered a field he excels in. An athlete at heart, he conveys the benefits of physical activity with enthusiasm. Foelsch has discovered the importance of therapeutic recreation because of his own healing process. He is working together with Hamlin’s Recreation Director to create such a component in Hamlin’s Recreation Department.
Balancing his collegiate degree requirements and family commitments with multiple work responsibilities, Foelsch is employed as the sports coordinator and program assistant for the Hamlin Recreation Department and serves as the manager assistant for Rock Ventures in Rochester.
His volunteer efforts include multiple youth sports coaching experiences, participation in the Brockport Recreation & Leisure Club, coaching the Brockport Rugby Team, and serving as an active member of the Friends of Hamlin Recreation, Inc. He is also a current member of the New York State Recreation and Park Society. His willingness to help his fellow residents in any capacity is only diminished by his own commitments to become a knowledgeable therapeutic recreation professional in the future. Foelsch is a lifelong resident of Hamlin.
