Help Wanted: Workers for NY Agriculture

New York farmers face growing pressure to recruit and retain qualified and willing work staff on their farms. Their dilemma becomes even more difficult as they comply with and keep abreast of ever-changing workforce labor requirements.

These issues and more will be explored and explained for anyone interested in learning about farm labor issues on Wednesday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Duryea Room, Seymour Library, 161 East Avenue, Brockport.

Guest speaker will be Tom Maloney, Sr. Extension Associate at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University, Ithaca. He will present information on workforce trends resulting in a tight labor market, discussion of immigration policies that New York farm managers support, the significant role guest workers play in fruit and vegetable production in New York, and the role of labor saving technology.

This program is sponsored by Compassionate Brockport, whose goal is “creating a Caring Community.” It traces its beginning to early 2017 when members of the Brockport Interfaith Ministries met with SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson to address ways to create “a more welcoming environment for all in Brockport.”

This gathering is open to the public. Email Karen Baase by Monday, June 25 at karenbaase@gmail.com to indicate interest in attending.
