Student Leadership Day held at Byron-Bergen
Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High Principal Aaron Johnson and Assistant Principal Patrick McGee welcomed class officers, National Honor Society Officers, and Student Council Officers to the annual “Student Leadership Day’ on August 7. Johnson and McGee facilitated the day focusing on goal-setting and student leadership, while helping students brainstorm and develop plans for the upcoming school year and the Olweus Bullying Program.
The day started by focusing on setting individual goals and identifying their personal strengths as student leaders. Students were challenged to think about the leadership skills of someone they emulate, and then collaborate on how those leadership skills could help the Byron-Bergen school community.
The second part of the day began “With the End in Mind” where students developed a vision and plan for the upcoming school year. Johnson reminded the students to make their personal goals specific and measurable. McGee, along with Scott Fitch, a representative from Jostens, discussed personal and educational goals with the students focusing on goals as student leaders and goals for the Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School.
The day concluded with students collaborating on various bullying and anti-bullying topics, making suggestions for further growth of the program, and creating new topics and activities to add to the Olweus Program.
Byron-Bergen Central School implemented the Olweus Bullying Program last year and it will be held again this year during half hour blocks built into the instructional day twice a month with the first Olweus session for all students on October 11.
