Ogden Baptist Church celebrates 200 years of faith and devotion in 2019. Bits of history will be shared during service most Sundays with a big celebration including a picnic and special celebration worship service planned for the weekend of June 1 and 2.
The church is also planning to collect 200 items per month to support mission partners. February will be “Pasta and Sauce Month” and the congregation will be collecting 200 packages of any kind of pasta and jars (plastic) or cans of sauce for the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf. Those wishing to contribute to the February goal may drop off pasta and sauce at the church, 721 Washington Street, any Tuesday or Thursday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., or Sunday between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call the church office at 352-1077 or email obcspencerport@gmail.com with questions.
Other months will be designated as the year moves forward. Plans for celebration continue to be in the works and will be shared as they are developed.
As the Town of Ogden was established, settlers were arriving from areas further east. A group of strong Baptists arrived in covered wagons from Salisbury, New Hampshire in 1816 and began to settle and clear land for farms. By 1818, the need for regular Baptist worship was felt and three of the women went to the town of Sweden where the Holland Purchase Baptist Association was holding their first session for 1818. Here they sought to find a Baptist minister who would come and hold meetings in their new settlement.
