Rangers second-half rally falls short

Sophomore Cartier Jefferson and junior Trey Kubitz helped Spencerport bounce back from an early eight-point deficit, but they couldn’t sustain their 21-17 advantage over the middle two quarters in falling in boys basketball to Webster-Thomas 45-34 on senior night.

Spencerport senior Nick Thibeau hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to help the Rangers close to within two points of the lead at halftime.

Junior Mike Contestabile opened the second half with a field goal and classmate Ben Reding gave the Rangers their first lead of the game with a trey early in the third. Gino Pellett also knocked down a three-pointer about midway through the third as the Rangers led 28-25, but the rally ended shortly afterward as the Titans went on a 20-6 run to end the game.

Sophomore Patrick Uebelacker led the Rangers with eight points, Jefferson finished with seven, Pellett six and Thibeau five. He and Dave Stewart each played in the final home basketball game of their high school careers.

The Rangers finished the regular season with a 5-15 record and were seeded ninth for the Class A1 Section V playoffs. They had a first round matchup with eighth-seed Aquinas with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals against top-seed and undefeated Pittsford-Mendon.
