Every nine seconds, another woman is the U.S. is beaten. One in four women in the U.S. will experience domestic violence in their lifetime, most frequently by someone they know. Forty to 60 percent of men who abuse women also abuse children.
89.1 The Point is teaming up with the Willow Domestic Violence Center and the communities of Orleans, Genesee, and Monroe counties to collect women’s and children’s clothing, along with personal care and pet care items for the center.
Each year, Willow Center provides services to over 7,500 clients and reaches another 12,000 through prevention education in the Greater Rochester area. Willow offers 24/7 Crisis and Support Hotline, a 49-bed Emergency Residential Shelter, and Willow is also one of the very few violence centers that offer pet services.
When survivors of domestic violence escape their abusive homes they’re not only faced with the challenge of finding shelter for themselves and their children, but also for their pets. Concern about what might happen to their pets keeps 65 percent of domestic violence survivors from leaving the abuser. The Pet Program helps survivors heal by keeping their pets with them during a difficult time.
89.1 The Point will be at the Walmart in Batavia and in Brockport on Friday, October 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Point will be onsite with Prevention and Outreach of the College at Brockport.
