Diabetes questions answered at Brockport event

On November 2, Rochester Regional Health’s Brockport Medical Campus kicked off Diabetes Awareness Month with a Diabetes and Wellness Education Day. The event treated attendees to cooking demonstrations, nutrition coaching, and information sessions on important equipment such as sensors and insulin pumps. Event goers also had the opportunity to learn from experts in physical therapy, occupational therapy and family medicine.

Dr. Salman Azim, an endocrinologist for Rochester Regional Health, gave a keynote presentation on diabetes medication therapies and new technology supporting diabetes care.

At the end of the event, Rochester Regional Health honored the Brockport Lions Club, who raised critical funds to purchase a RetinaVue camera, which helps to quickly diagnose diabetes by taking images of the eyes. Early detection and timely treatment of diabetes can reduce the risk of vision loss by 95 percent.

Rochester Regional Health Diabetes Educator Amy Stacy explained, “Having the RetinaVue camera in our office, ready to use for any patient in need, has expanded our ability to assist our diabetic patients in their care. It is a wonderful point of care instrument that is easy to use and may help to improve diabetic patient’s quality of life.”
