Late goals spark Rangers

Brandon Corey tied the game with an extra-attacker goal with just 24 seconds remaining in regulation and Jackson Charron won it in overtime as Spencerport overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Brockport 3-2 in high school hockey.

Brockport jumped out to a 1-0 midway through the first period when Mitchell Henshaw skated down the left wing one-on-one with the defenseman and found the top right corner with his wrist shot at 7:54. Matt Roe assisted.

The Rangers tied it 1-1 in the final minute of the first period when Evan Conolly took a pass from Nick Charron and backhanded it over the goaltender’s leg pad at 14:17.

Brandon Henshaw put Brockport back in front at 5:36 of the second period with a wrap-around tally with assists by Roe and Mitchell Henshaw.

Brockport had a power lay opportunity with three minutes remaining in regulation, but Rangers goaltender Ryan Schirano, made several point-blank and rebound saves to keep his team close.

“I was just trying to keep it even; I had faith in my team,” said Schirano.

It paid off. With Schirano on the bench for the extra attacker, Evan Conolly threw the puck to the net where Brandon Corey pushed it across the goal-line to tie the game 2-2 with just 24 seconds left in regulation.

Just 1:04 in overtime, Nick Charron passed d-to-d to Aiden Conolly on the right point. His shot rang off the right post directly to Jackson Charron, who pounded it into the net for the game-winner.

“We were down late so we wanted to put a lot of pressure on them by getting pucks deep,” said Jackson Charron. “We worked on the extra-attacker situation during our last practice. Everybody just goes to the net hard.”

Schirano is tied for the league-lead with 10 wins. He made 23 saves in the win. Corey’s goal marked his 21st of the season (in 14 games) and tied him for the league-lead.

“Winning helps and we are a year older,” said Spencerport head coach Jason Rich. “We’re starting to believe we can win after first needing to realize that we could win at the start of the season. That and getting Aiden Conolly and Schirano (from a year off to wrestle) back has helped tremendously.”

The Rangers entered the final three weeks of the season just one win away from equaling their season total for the last two seasons combined.
