Brockport Free Methodist Church on Fourth Section Road in Brockport has a new lead pastor. Andy Sass, formerly at Northgate Free Methodist Church in Batavia, has taken over for Tom Strop, who was the lead pastor of BFMC for 37 years.
Sass graduated from Asbury Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky, before serving churches in Cattaraugus, Fredonia and Batavia. He is adjunct professor at Northeastern Seminary, teaching evangelism and discipleship, as well as facilitating field education for seminarians. He and his wife, Lori, have sons aged 24 and 22 years and a daughter who is 19.
“We want to move away from thinking we’ll reach this community for Christ just with programs at the church,” Sass says about his approach to his ministry. “You are the program in the world where you live,” he says of his congregation. “Wherever you are placed, if you listen to other people’s stories, sooner or later your story will intersect with theirs. That’s when you have the opportunity to say, ‘The same God that changed my story can change yours.’ ”
