Winter can be an extremely harsh time for those without homes. Freezing temperatures and lack of access to basic necessities can make life difficult. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program became aware of an opportunity to support this population to assist them through the cold winter months.
The Point in Time survey is an annual survey conducted by Partners Ending Homelessness. Each year, volunteers go out and count how many people without homes there are in Rochester, as well as deliver supplies. This survey can be used to obtain grant funding to mitigate homelessness. To give back to the community, the 4-H program decided to take part in this opportunity to gather supplies for those experiencing homelessness.
Cornell Cooperative Extension staff, clubs, and volunteers filled buckets with needed items, including gloves, snacks, and hand warmers. Eleven buckets were donated in total.
Once organized, the buckets were delivered to the Providence Housing Center. The staff expressed gratitude for all of the donations.

The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth aged five to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. In return, youth who participate in 4-H find a supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on or “experiential” learning about things that interest them.
