Two pickleball courts in the Village of Brockport open Tuesday, August 5, 10 a.m. at the Barry Street Park (off Fayette Street). Carol Brakenbury and Losh Spalla are event co-chairs. On-site demonstrations and play are planned.
Pickleball, a racquet sport invented in the mid-sixties, combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Considered one of the fastest growing sports in North America, it is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net. This sport is popular among adults, senior citizens (who enjoy the social aspects and the ability to stay active), and children and teenagers who play it in physical education classes.
The Barry Street Park courts are the most western outdoor courts in Monroe County that has over 60 indoor and outdoor courts. In the Greater Rochester area, pickleball has 670 registrants who receive information regarding court sites and availability, tournaments, and partner match-ups. In addition, the Rochester Pickleball Club had hundreds of players of all ages and skill levels.
