The Brockport Symphony Orchestra will present their Soloist Showcase Concert on Thursday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Seymour College Union Ballroom, Residence Drive at The College at Brockport.
Under the baton of Jonathan Allentoff, this free concert will feature six outstanding soloists, the Golden Eagle String Band, and members of the Brockport College-Community Chorus. Dr. William Hullfish, associate professor of music emeritus at Brockport, will premiere his new “Celtic Dance Suite” for pennywhistle, string band, and orchestra. Scott Horsington, director of the Brockport Clarinet Ensemble, will perform Allentoff’s arrangement of Finzi’s “Romance” for clarinet and orchestra. Lydia Allen, the orchestra’s principal horn and an arts for children major at Brockport, will perform Mozart’s “Allegro from Concerto No. 1 for Horn and Orchestra.” Peter Ferry, a recent recipient of the prestigious Performer’s Certificate at the Eastman School of Music, will perform Sejourne’s “A Placere – Expressif et lyrique from Concerto for Vibraphone and String Orchestra.” Meg Walters, the orchestra’s principal bassoon and Eastman School graduate, will perform Allentoff’s arrangement of Mac Dowell’s “A Lovely Rose” for bassoon and orchestra.
The concert will conclude with “Avinu Shebashamayim” by Sol Zim, arranged by Allentoff for baritone, chorus, and orchestra. The vocal soloist will be Cantor/Hazzan Martin Leubitz of Temple Beth El, who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary for his contributions during his career in the cantorate. Cantor Leubitz has composed and published several pieces for Hazzan and Congregation, and he is the featured soloist on two recordings, High Holiday Favorites and Shma Koleinu.
