Here we are in the midst of the holiday season once again and it’s time to focus on gifts for gardeners. Gardeners really are not difficult to buy for, in fact there are numerous items that make terrific gifts for those who love plants, digging in the dirt and growing things.

There is no doubt that handy garden tools are always a great idea for gardeners. Gardeners work hard and even the best of tools need replacing.  A new pruner, trowel, dibbler, gloves or a cultivator are certain to be welcome.  There is also a great selection out there of gardeners’ totes and tool belts which are great for hauling your tools around the garden with you.

Air plants – Tillandsia – are popular right now and so easy to care for.  There is an incredible variety of air plants available at local garden centers as well as planters to house them in including hanging planters, open terrariums, and small indoor potted tranquility gardens. Air plants are so versatile and fun.  Put together a kit for creating an indoor display of air plants which can be changed to reflect the seasons.

Pottery, dinnerware and serving ware featuring botanical themes make fun and useful gifts for gardeners which bring the beauty of plants and the natural world to mealtime.  Ceramics decorated with leaves and flowers help to make it feel like spring anytime.

Culinary herbs make a great gift, especially welcome in the winter when the outside herb garden is buried in snow.  Fresh herbs are wonderful for cooking and garnishing dishes and the plants do well indoors. They make a charming indoor garden and are so pretty on windowsills or any sunny location near the kitchen.

Handy kitchen tools and gadgets for cleaning and prepping fresh vegetables are great for gardeners.  There are a wealth of items out there, from scrubbers, to peelers, to tools that will snip and then strip leaves from herbs and leafy greens such as kale – something which can be a chore.

You don’t need great talent to make beautiful pictures with pressed leaves and  flowers.  A flower press is a terrific gift for gardeners who would like to preserve the beauty of the garden to enjoy year round.  Pressed flowers can also help to decorate a keepsake garden scrapbook or journal documenting the growing season.

Don’t forget pollinators.  Give gardeners seeds for pollinator favorites like purple coneflowers or zinnias. Give a book about gardening for pollinators or “puddlers” for butterflies which provide them with a place to obtain needed minerals from sand, salt and water.

As always, make a priority of shopping local. We have beautiful and inspiring garden stores right in our own backyard with experts who know all about  gardening in our area.
