Alzheimer’s Association offers new support groups

Beginning in September, the Alzheimer’s Association, Rochester & Finger Lakes Chapter,  will offer additional support groups and classes for caregivers on the west side of Monroe County.
Three caregiver support groups will be offered:
•Brockport: 7 to 8 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at the Brockport Free Methodist Church, 6787 Fourth Section Road.
•Gates: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at Seabury Woods, 110 Dalaker Drive.
•Greece: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the Greece Community and Senior Center, 3 Vince Tofany Boulevard.
The support groups are free and no registration is required. In-home respite care for the loved one with dementia is available during the support group with one week’s notice. To learn more about respite care, call the Alzheimer’s Association at (800) 272-3900.

•Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease
Explore what distinguishes Alzheimer’s disease from normal aging, how Alzheimer’s is diagnosed and what community resources are available for those facing the disease. September 19, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Gates Public Library, 902 Elmgrove Road, Gates.
•Living with Alzheimer’s, Early Stage, Part 1
When someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, friends and family have many questions. What does the diagnosis mean? What kinds of plans need to be made? What will happen as the disease progresses? Living with Alzheimer’s is a series of classes that will provide answers to the questions that will arise in the different stages of the disease. Learn what you need to know, what you need to plan and what you can do at each point along the way. September 18, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Seymour Public Library, 161 East Avenue, Brockport; September 26, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Greece Public Library, 2 Vince Tofany Blvd., Greece.
•Nutrition and Dementia
Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia is a challenge. Learn how to ensure that this person eats correctly and that their nutritional needs are met. September 17, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at The Villages at Unity, 1471 Long Pond Road, Greece.
The classes are free and open to caregivers, family and friends of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. Registration is required. To register, call (800) 272-3900 or go to alz.org/rochesterny.
